I’m Sara Gunn—artist, designer, and founder of Tough Girl Tattoos in Nelson, BC.

Before I started tattooing, I was sewing, sketching, and studying fashion design. Creativity has always been my way of processing the world, and over time, tattooing became the most honest and personal form of that expression.

I opened Tough Girl Tattoos to offer something more than just beautiful ink—I wanted to create a space where people could feel safe, seen, and empowered through the art they wear. This is a private studio, not a walk-in shop. Every session is intentional, every design is custom, and every client is treated with care and respect.

My work blends fine line detail, blackwork, and symbolic storytelling—drawing inspiration from themes like resilience, transformation, softness, strength and the beauty of nature. Many of my clients come to me with deeply personal stories: tattoos to honor grief, celebrate healing, or mark major life changes. That trust means everything to me, and I hold it with pride. I also love creating tattoos that are just fun, expressive and a good time.

When I’m not tattooing, I’m cuddling my dogs, camping or riding my mountain bike. I also share about mental health, creativity, and healing through art on my social media. Mental health is a big part of my daily life and I like to share my experiences with my followers to normalize daily struggles and show that you are never alone.
